Recovering Unsaved Microsoft Word Documents

Overview

The following article provides information on how to recover unsaved Microsoft Word documents.

Issue

Microsoft Word closed or crashed before I could save my work.

Troubleshooting

1. Open Microsoft Word and Select File.

2. Select Info.

3. Select Manage Documents.

4. From the drop down list, select Recover Unsaved Documents.

The Open dialog box will open displaying a list of your unsaved recoverable Word documents.

5. Select the Word document you wish to recover and select Open.

Select from the list of unsaved files the Word document you wish to recover and click Open button

The recovered Word document is now open and displays an information banner across the top recommending that you save the file.

6. Select the Save As button and save your Word document.

Click the white rectangular button with black text "Save As" to save a permanent copy of the unsaved file.
