Recover Deleted Items - Outlook

Overview

If you accidentally deleted an item from Outlook, it may be recoverable from the Deleted Items folder.  After 30 days, items are moved from the Deleted Items folder to Recoverable Items. Items in this folder can be recovered for up to 14 days.

Instructions

Deleted Items Folder

To search for items recently deleted, navigate to the Deleted Items folder in the Outlook desktop application or the Outlook Web App (OWA).

Recover Deleted Items

30 days after deletion, items are moved from the Deleted Items folder to the Recoverable Items folder.  This is a hidden folder.  Items can also be moved to the Recoverable Items folder if you delete an item from Deleted Items, Empty the Deleted Items folder, or permanently delete an item (Shift + Delete).

The preferred method for restoring items from the recoverable items is using OWA.  Items restored using OWA will be saved in their original locations. The Outlook desktop app will restore to the deleted items folder.

Navigate to the Recoverable Items folder by selecting the link within the Deleted Items folder:

  • Outlook Web App: Deleted Items folder > Recover items deleted from this folder
  • Outlook Desktop App: Deleted Items folder > Recover items recently removed from this folder or Recover Deleted items

Select the file(s) that you wish to recover and select Restore (OWA) or OK (Outlook desktop).  If using Outlook desktop, find the file in deleted items and move to another location.
